1 George was the 4th of 7 children of Elisha Swinford and Mary Frances Grogan, all born in Indiana. When he was about 10, his family moved 70 miles west from Putnam County, Indiana to Coles County, Illinois in 1850. When he was 16 years old his father died.
George enlisted on the side of the Union on December 1, 1861 as a private in Captain James Ashmore's Company C, 8th regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Colonel Richard J Oglesby who later became governor was commanding. George was honorably discharged at Vicksburg Mississippi January 31, 1864 and re-enlisted the next day as a private of the same company and regiment under Captain Daniel Sayers with Colonel Josiah A Sheets commanding. He was offered promotion but declined. After spending some time guarding government property in Texas, the 8th was mustered out at Baton Rouge, Louisiana on May 4, 1866. During the war he was wounded by a gunshot in his left knee and chin, and by buck shot in left shoulder blade.
In 1867 he married Mray Titus and they had one child, Julia. Mary died in 1869 and he married the widow Rachel Digby in 1872. They had no children, but adopted a son, Ora William Writesman. He was given the name Ora Franklin Swinford.
George farmed on 240 acres he owned. He was affiliated with the Republican party, and served 6 years as School Director. He was a member of the Oakland Post, No. 188 Grand Army of the Republic, and served as its Chaplain. He was a member and class leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Swinford, George Henry (I85943)

2 I (R. J. Nielsen) have an issue where DNA has identified the father of my
great-grandfather, Jonathan Crumpton (1844-1922) through connections with
several descendants, but the mother is probably one of two sisters, Emily
Emerson or Martha Emerson. I'm hoping to find some record that might
identify which one.
Martha was living in Glasgow Junction in 1870, with her 4-year-old
daughter. Her sister Emily was *probably* living in Rocky Hill with the
family of her sister Lucy, whose husband Marion Crumpton was Jonathan
Crumpton's brother. (Emily is listed in the census as "Emily ---",
underneath the Compton family, implying that her surname is also Compton,
or Crumpton, but no such young woman exists anywhere else in the records,
whereas an Emily Emerson of the right age did exists in previous censuses.)
Whichever young woman was the mother, she gave birth to my
great-grandfather, John Crumpton, in Kentucky around 1870 or 1871, and then
gave birth to his half-brother (different father) in 1872 in Missouri. I'm
hoping that John bearing the Crumpton surname might mean there was some
official acknowledgement of paternity after his birth.

8 5 of 7 children living in 1900 -- 1900 census states they had been md. 31 yrs. which adds to my doubt this is my family -- 4 of 7 children living in 1910 -- US Social Security Applications and Claims Index for Charles Frederick Vaughn states that his parents were John C. Vaughn and Sarah C. Lambert which leads me to think that the John C. Vaughn that md. Sarah J. Magers was not my family; Or, perhaps, Sarah J. Magers died and John then remarried to another Sarah, this time Sarah C. Lambert Lambert, Sarah C. (I88071)
